CanEggs Photo Shoot

, , ,

On Saturday, 09 June 2018 CanEggs scheduled a lifestyle products photoshoot on the top floor of a luxury condominium at 38 Joe Shuster Way that just happened to have a world-class view of a historic rugby game happening twenty floors below and across the street in Lamport Stadium. The Toronto Wolfpack was down there surrounded by seven thousand fans in a quest to best the London Broncos. Our makeup artists and models enjoyed the show, but honestly they were busy inside our condo rental most of the afternoon trying-out CanEggs' brand Egg White Powder in a quest to make healthy, protein-rich smoothies and beauty secrets.

Composing Protein Infused Fruit Smoothies

The beverage aisle in your local market is today filled with meal replacement liquids that promise protein in the mix.  Athletes building muscle mass seek protein in every form, and so with that in mind we decided to gather our own creative people together and create and share some recipes ourselves.

We put two dozen different healthy ingredients on the table, along with skim milk powder, yogurt, and chocolate powder. We sourced a cornucopia of fruit and natural fruit juice blends.  We made sure there were dozens of different combinations, even more with soya milk, citrus blends, and carrot juice. There was ice cream, maple syrup, and honey for sweetening.  Everything a smoothie maker could ever desire was laid out on the table along with a 2kg bag of egg white powder and a 35gm scoop.

Our cooks got creative with mangoes, bananas, kiwis, and watermelons. Some of the best recipes that were recorded that day celebrated the classics; peach + mango, banana + strawberry, and pineapple plus coconut milk were among the best combinations.  One chef brought a 2 liter container of black cherry juice and this made a terrifically tangy black cherry flavored smoothie.

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt.

This makes about eight cups of a delicious frothy pink-colored cherry-flavored liquid smoothie.

Toronto Makeup Artist, Jennifer Turner from Modern Makeup

For many centuries, chicken egg whites have been touted as a great way to tighten skin pores, giving human skin an overall smoother, brighter appearance.  There are several cosmetic beauty products made with egg whites, and all of these are probably formulated using spray-dried egg white powder which allows more precise measurements and quality control.

We invited artist Jennifer Turner from Modern Makeup in Toronto to come help us concoct beauty masks and also to help us make smoothies which we enjoyed that afternoon as refreshing beverages.

Modern Makeup led the Egg & Honey Beauty Mask testing initiative that followed the smoothie sessions. Jenn brought her own ideas about adding avocados and essential oils to the face mask mix. It was our objective to find recipes that can help and not hinder egg whites' natural ability to both clean and restore skin tissue.  Because egg whites contain astringent properties our powder can be added to beauty masks to clean out oily pores on the face and scalp. As the afternoon progressed we tried many different formulations to boost egg whites' natural skin cleaning and buffing power.

Modern Makeup's Egg White Powder Face Mask – the recipe makes enough for two masks.

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 75 grams (2 scoops) of CanEgg's powdered egg whites
  • 1/2  ripe avocado
  • 1 peeled kiwi
  • 1.5 tbsp of unpasteurized local honey
  • 2 drops of X essential oil

Jenn mixed the mass together in the blender, but then added more egg white powder to thicken up the mixture just before applying it to the model's faces.

Egg whites, a beauty super tool, could also bring disaster if used incorrectly.

WORST CASE SCENARIO:  The application of a raw egg white 'mask' can clog a person's skin pores and increase the possibility of acne breakouts for young people. Other negative side effects for using fresh egg whites versus powdered eggs include the spread of bacteria on the skin, as raw egg whites contain salmonella, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning.

BEST CASE SCENARIO:  Science validates the age-old beauty secret claim published in medical journals and dermatological reviews all over the globe, that protein molecules in egg whites do indeed help reduce wrinkles and acne on the surface and inside human skin, over time.

Useful Egg-Based Skin Treatments in Daily Beauty Rituals

Asian skin model tries egg white powder face mask for beautyThe take-away is that using egg white powder skin salves and beauty masks is useful for your skin; we recommend whipping the egg white powder until it is foamy, and then applying a thin film under the eyes to firm eye bags and wrinkles and give yourself a little 'eye lift' as part of a daily beauty ritual.

Jen reminds us that if you apply makeup over the film once it has dried, then it will last a few hours.

Egg white powder can be liquefied and used as a base for other masks, salves and treatments; other ingredients such as bananas, oatmeal, honey can be added to improve the mixture's texture or, if desired, to temporarily tighten and dry oily skin. The model above is age 15 and suffers from mild skin acne. Egg white, or albumen, is a liquid consisting of about 15 percent protein and 85 percent water in its natural state.

When beauticians apply albumen to a human face, the water evaporates moisture away and the proteins change their texture, forming a film. This makes skin feel tight.  Beauticians describe it "like putting a coat of paint on your face, and letting it dry."  The tightening sensation is a false signal that leads users to believe that the egg mask is instantly firming their skin.  It doesn't happen this way. Without any additional ingredients, basic egg white powder salves can have a drying effect on skin that may make it feel tighter, but the real benefits are more long term.  Adding egg white powder to your skin regime will result in cleaner, healthier skin that naturally looks better.

Because egg whites contain collagen and proteins which can tone and tighten human skin, many cosmetics companies use egg whites for beauty.  Does it work? There must be some benefits to using egg whites on the skin as there are several different mainstream cosmetics companies that make and sell beauty products that harness the skin rejuvenating powers of egg whites. While going directly to the source is still recommended for most things, the age-old egg & honey face mask is much better when made with powdered egg whites rather than fresh eggs. Using dehydrated albumen improves the experience, and the results, and is generally considered safer as there is no salmonella bacteria in powdered egg whites. Below are five beauty brands that have incorporated egg whites into the manufacture of their skincare products:

Egg White Pore Foam by Skinfood

Egg White Pore contains Water, Myristic Acid, Glycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, and the fifth ingredient is 'Foam' which we believe is the egg whites and probably powdered egg whites in a base 'lather' generating reaction. According to the description on the store page, "...the gentle egg-white based cleanser works to deep-clean pores while removing traces of makeup and dirt, leaving users with a refreshingly clean canvas for their skincare regimen. Great for all skin types, especially those looking to clean pores and control blackheads. " So the Skinfood company is also focusing on the acne prevention and mitigation use-case.

Black Egg Pore Serum

This popular cosmetic product is sold all over the world.  The pore-refining finishing powder in apricot color improves the appearance of enlarged pores while creating a silky veil for the skin. The product is designed to be lightly dusted on the face using the powder puff applicator. Diving deeper, as there is lots of literature on this popular product, we learn that it ...contains egg extract to tighten enlarged pores while controlling excessive sebum and oiliness. Enriched with albumin, egg white extract promotes firmer and smoother skin as well as smaller pores.  The product alleges that it makes skin look and feel firmer.

Egg Pore Shiny Skin Soap

Sold as a hard egg-shaped bar, or as soft-soap in a 150 gram squeeze tube, Egg Pore Shiny Skin Soap is pore refining cleanser with egg white extract that deep-cleanses pores. Enriched with albumen, it promotes firmer skin and minimizes the size of pores.  Made by the TONYMOLY company, the Egg Pore Shiny Skin Soap is composed of red clay, coconut oil and the white of an egg.  You can see in the photo on the left that the packaging is rather gimmicky; two hard-boiled eggs, one white and one brown, are really bars of soap, and come in a mini egg-container package.

Perricone MD OVM

This is the most expensive option thus far, Perricone MD OVM is $165 for 2oz container at Sephora. The description begins by explaining how OVM is one of Dr. Perricone's greatest inventions and is scientifically formulated with 'Eggshell Membrane'.  That term refers to the sticky film inside the egg that lines the inner shell. Dr. Perricone postulates that this is a powerful anti-aging compound. They believe the Eggshell Membrane contains a precise ratio of nutrients, proteins, and peptides that help rejuvenate and restore human skin's beauty and health. Now, newly enriched with Vitamin C Ester and Vitamin E, OVM delivers a 3-dimensional anti-aging effect to increase the appearance of skin's volume, cushion, and firmness while providing the added benefit of deep nourishment for smoother, more radiant-looking skin.
